Save the Pies!

The question: Why should pies be "saved" or put into the breed standard?

The ultimate question is, why shouldn't they be put into the standard? Color and pattern should not be reason for dismissal from the show ring. Conformation should be the only reason.

It is our assessment that any pattern should be acceptable, which includes double dapples. While we do not breed for double dapples, we firmly believe that, as a pattern, it should be permissible and be held to its own criteria within the breed standard. Barring colors/patterns from the show ring will not halt the production of such Dachshunds; it will simply result in poor quality Dachshunds.

Despite opposition by select parties, blues, isabellas, double dapples, and piebalds are all true Dachshunds. With that truism, shouldn't they be held to a certain criterion just as reds and black and tans? Although, currently the main focus is piebalds, blues, isabellas, etc., are left wide open for attack, too. No doubt, we will need to address those issues in the future. However, to shun these Dachshunds would only cause deterioration in quality—which is the main goal anyway!

While it more than obvious that these dogs are not people, shouldn't we consider the fact that they are Dachshunds, and they should not be segregated from the standard based on coat color and pattern? Seems rather archaic in belief in contrast to the modern world we live in today.

Piebalds are no longer “bucket puppies.” Wake up people! It’s just another pattern in the ever-diverse genetics of the Dachshunds we love so much.

We think the “Dachshund world” needs to embrace these dogs and to contribute to the betterment of the breed. The beloved elephant, Horton, of Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, sums it up nicely, "A person is a person no matter how small." While we adhere to that tenet, we also believe that a Dachshund is a Dachshund no matter what coat.

-Color Crisis Committee-

There are those at the Dachshund Club of America that would love to see our BEAUTIFUL piebalds banned from the AKC Standard. Their attempts have, thus far, failed. It's not hard to imagine why they've been unsuccessful. Please visit the Color Crisis Committe's website to learn more information, www.dachshundcolorcrisis.org (it is listed as our fourth link on the Links page). If you own any piebalds, we urge your to submit your dogs' DNA for research in order to aid the campaign to preserve the piebald pattern. It's in the lower right hand corner of their website and it is completely free. Aston, Jack, Dash, Daisy, and Mo' have contributed! Thank you!

Mmm, pie has never looked so good!
